Observing Benguet State Univeristy Elementary Laboratory School Teaching System

The Teachers in the BSU-ELS

Hello Everyone🤗!

Now will share to you my observations about the teachers at the BSU-Elementary Laboratory School, especially my mentor teacher. First of all I will introduce my mentor teacher to you, his name is Sir Albert Bolcio. Sir Albert teaches Aral Pan (Social Studies) and Science subjects for grades 5 and 6.

Regarding his lesson planning, Sir Albert makes his daily logs for the determination of his teaching materials every day (from Monday to Thursday). And every Thursday there will be an evaluation to find out the achievements of students during the week of study. Here is the daily log of Sir Albert.

Daily Log of Sir Albert

Regarding his everyday preparation for teaching, before teaching Sir Albert always check his daily log and prepare textbooks and materials that can be used by students to learn. In preparing the lessons and materials that will be given to the students, I think Sir Albert is not  pressured because he might have had the experience to teach on the same topics.

Furthermore, regarding measurement and evaluation, Sir Albert always targets that these activities will be conducted every Thursday. Until now I do not know how Sir Albert is measuring and evaluating because this week is not yet an active learning week.

Moving on to how he teach in class, he always starts by reviewing the subject matter that has been learned on the previous day (review stage). After that, he will undertake aspiration (motivation stage) to prepare students mentally before entering the main lesson of the day to be studied. I think this is a good practice in teaching. Furthermore, he will present the main material to be studied within the presentation stage. In a flowing manner, he will bring students into the discussion stage. He always asks questions related to daily life and invites students to think critically. And after the lesson ends, he will give homeworks to his students and will gather the next day.

When Sir Albert is Teaching

Observing his teaching style/strategy, I think he is relaxed and he always brings materials, flowing discussions, and always associates with the real life of the students. He also uses a contextual approach in teaching a topic to students so that the lessons received by students will be felt in real life. He also invites students to discuss by throwing various questions that make students think reasoning / critical, and in my opinion this is very good for developing critical thinking patterns to the students. He also encourages group-based learning and learning by the method of learning by doing. In explaining the topic or lesson for the day, he only relied on blackboards, textbooks, and objects that were around.

When Sir Albert is Teaching

One day I was given the opportunity to observe teaching activities in Grade 2 Camia and Rose. I was excited and I want to know how the class situation is and how the teacher teaches. First I visited Camia Class 2 on Wednesday precisely at 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 am. I met their class teacher named Miss Fely. There I was welcomed very well by the class teacher and her children (class). Class begun with a prayer together which I think is very wisdom. It’s a very good habit in my opinion. Next, the students were invited to sing through a video show on the television. I saw the teacher teaching the class cheerfully using various songs and cheers. She also used puppets in teaching which eagers the students became cheerful. She is also very good in classroom  management so students always obey her.

Lastly, on Thursday, I was also given the opportunity to observe the teacher's teaching method in class 2 Rose at 8.00 am - 9.00 am. She is Ma’am Joey as the Grade 2 Camia’s teacher. She is a teacher with fun techniques and having lots of interesting pat. She is also proficient in class management so that the class is always conducive. In teaching, she combined games to make students become interested in teaching. She also used the numerical score as a reward for students. She also stressed more on group-based learning.
